Goldstone Primary School, Hove, 2008
The Goldstone Primary School in Hove Project in October 2008, was to build the complete wildlife area with pond. It was built on part of the school field that had a wooded area at the end.
With help of the headmaster Chris Pearson and Vania Seevaramen one of the teachers on the project we came up with where exactly the pond should go and how large it should be.
So with my 5 man team we started on the Friday and removed turf and set up the safety area, then on Saturday we got to work digging the pond with a digger and setting up and building the fence around the pond as a safety fence so the area is contained within.
We had quite a bit of volunteer help with some teachers and quite a few parents, which on school projects is great to have as this shows the involvement of the school community. So we dug out a twenty foot by twenty foot pond, which we lined with a pond liner and covered over with soil to look natural, as this is a natural wildlife pond and not an ornamental
fish pond and by putting a soil cover on the liner encourages and creates much more biodiversity.
With the fence built and the pond lined, the rest of the soil from out of the pond was used to build a bank at the back of pond and also used to create habitats as well.
I re- turfed the area with the turf we had removed for the pond and put in a dipping platform which can then be used by the school as a safe area and gives the rest of the pond a wild life sanctuary area.
A few days after finishing the pond area I came back and with the Environment Club and Vania planted the pond with native water plants from my nursery. Because of the time of year there were not many plants available, so in spring 2009 I shall be back to plant some more things like Frogbit which dies back in winter and some Hornwort to help oxygenate the pond .
There are no projects too large or small for me as long as I have information I can plan the project depending on your budget.
